Grupo Entreposto (GE) and the Gorongosa National Park have signed a protocol within the scope of GE joining the Gorongosa Business Club, which aims at supporting the Poaching Combat Unit at the Gorongosa National Park in order to increase the power to fight a problem that is affecting more of Mozambique’s wildlife these days.
Grupo Entreposto has decided - following their Social Responsibility strategy - to support this Unit, since it is crucial to fight poaching in order to save and preserve Mozambique’s wildlife and biodiversity. The main goals are to support the Gorongosa National Park in increasing patrol effectiveness and covering more remote areas; to ensure access, prevention, and an efficient and quick intervention in order to neutralise poaching; to prevent illegal logging; to prevent conflict between animals and communities; to intensify the identification and collection of traps; to raise awareness in the community for the importance of preserving biodiversity.
Grupo Entreposto’s Manager, Jose Cardoso, spoke about the protocol during the event: ‘We are delighted to establish a partnership with one of the main preservation symbols in Mozambique. Our inclusion in the Gorongosa Business Club and support of the Gorongosa National Park’s Poaching Combat Unit is intended to be long-term and will result, throughout 2015, in the acquisition of a motorised patrol boat for operations in remote areas, the development of advanced training and specialised coaching of patrol units, the acquisition of two-way radios, uniforms, and boots, and support of daily patrol logistic duties.’
Greg Carr, Head of the Gorongosa Restoration Project (GRP) and member of the Gorongosa National Park’s Supervision Committee, added that ‘It’s thanks to the support and dedication of organisations like Grupo Entreposto that we are able to work everyday in order to ensure a successful preservation of biodiversity and future development of the communities surrounding the Gorongosa National Park. We have been working on this for many years through the Gorongosa Restoration Project and now we will be able to achieve even more’, he went on to explain.
The Manager of the Gorongosa National Park, Mateus Mutemba, also stressed that ‘We are extremely delighted to welcome Grupo Entreposto in the Gorongosa Business Club. WE will only be able to succeed in preserving the Park’s biodiversity, fighting poaching, and developing the communities surrounding the Gorongosa National Park’s buffer zone with the support of Mozambique’s people and business community.’
Comprising an area of approximately 4000 km2, the Gorongosa National Park is located in the south edge of Africa's Great Rift Valley, in the heart of Mozambique. The Park protects and preserves nature and wildlife, and helps the local communities. It is the home to some of the biologically richest and geologically diverse ecosystems in the African continent. It borders on the caves and deep ravines of the Cheringoma Plateau, the broad Rift Valley savannah, and the precious humid tropical forest of Mount Gorongosa.
In addition to the many nationally relevant media, this ceremony also counted on the distinguished presence of the Chairman of the Board of Directors at Grupo Entreposto, Nuno Sousa, the Manager of Grupo Entreposto, Jose Cardoso, the Head of the Gorongosa Restoration Project (GRP) and member of the Gorongosa National Park’s Supervision Committee, Greg Carr, and the Manager of the Gorongosa National Park, Mateus Mutemba.
